He came from the south in his pony and trap
like Gabby Hayes a most popular chap
he'd come into the street cracking his whip
catching his horse with the lightest of tip
all the kids would form a queue
like Noah's Ark two by two
a penny a ride around the block
the nearest to a stagecoach we ever got

.

.

He was a popular visitor to east end streets
and always came with a bag of sweets
it didn't matter if you hadn't the penny
you still got a sweet he brought that many
I wonder today how he earned a living
or if this was charity that he was giving
who was that man this mysterious stranger
we called the Candyman our Lone Ranger
